The screenplay is based on the ground breaking romance novel The Price of Salt (also known as Carol) by Patricia Highsmith. Set in New York City during the early 1950’s, Carol tells the story of a forbidden love affair between a young aspiring photographer and an older woman going through a difficult divorce.
Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) spots the beautiful, elegant Carol (Cate Blanchett) perusing the doll displays in a 1950s Manhattan department store. The two women develop a fast bond that becomes a love with complicated consequences.
